Crybaby Cutler

By: JJ 9/9

It's March, the off season in football. Everyone is undoubtedly getting their brackets ready for the "Big Dance." However, I think there is a story in the NFL that needs to be discussed.

The Denver Broncos' team has a franchise quarterback named Jay Cutler. He is a prototypical quarterback around three years removed from Vanderbilt University. A young gun with a lot of upside. His arm is one of the strongest and most accurate in the league. The then head coach Mike Shanahan hand picked the quarterback with a top 15 pick, trading up in the draft to secure the position. With the right tutelage Shanahan thought this quarterback would take the Broncos to the elite status in the NFL. Last year the Broncos' Offense was rated second in the league. It was their defense that ultimately led to the firing of Shanahan after 14 years.

Once the reverberation of the firing stopped around the NFL, Cutler found his corner man gone. The Broncos' owner acted as quickly hiring as he did in firing. The Broncos had a new head coach, a young ambitious coach from the famed Patriots' tree. This is where there are two trains of thought. The coach tried to trade Cutler and get his man in. Cutler reacted with a temper tantrum of a three-year-old. Should the coach have talked with and massaged the ego of his young QB? Or is Cutler simply a commodity to be traded without emotional regard?

It's an interesting question, one that is asked in many professional sports today.

I think that communication is the most important part of any business relationship. The new coach owed it to the franchise to at least begin a relationship with his players. With that said, Cutler is acting like a brat. Not just your typical "kid in a candy store" brat. His spoiled behavior is legendary. Cutler's ego is hurt because he thinks he is above reproach. I hesitate to use the phrase "spoiled superstar" because I don't think Cutler's a superstar.

However, simply put, if your boss tried to improve their "team" by dismissing you, it would hurt emotionally but you just couldn't demand a trade. You'd head to the unemployment line. Maybe someday Cutler will head there too.
