Fads

By: Kirsten Beck-Okeson

Fads- what are some of the fads that people follow? The scary part about fads is that they seem to keep coming back. Fads that should never come back seem to never die. An example of that would be tie-dye; it is creeping back into our malls and infecting our wardrobes. This fad should have faded with the hippies, but like a cockroach it keeps coming back and won’t "dye." This fashion should only be acceptable on small children during the summer months or at spring street fairs. Instead it seems infect the scene of designer clothes. Retro fashions are good styles but wearing a tie-dye skirt to work, school, anywhere in public does not seem sane.

Another fad that has come back with a dripping rage is fringe. A little fringe in moderation on the edge of a dress seems like a bold enough statement that might be better made with some lace. Yet the deranged fashion world is not satisfied with that; they see fit to hang fringe all over boots. They also see fit to bring back the flapper in the worst way possible, a mini-dress dripping with fringe. The fringe just begs to get caught in something, anything. Fringe eaters include your car door, your purse, your chair, or perhaps the jewelry you are wearing.

Finally, we come to neon which should stay on the periodic table and not on your body. It seems to spread everywhere like some sort of radioactive disease. Pair it with a pair of animal print skinny jeans and you have a deadly combination. It is in everything: pants, shirts, sunglasses, shoes, even hair accessories. Somehow the bow a girl wears in her hair does not seem quite as cute when it gives you a headache to look at it. Perhaps a small splotch now and again seems as though it might be feasible, yet again, the fashion world is not satisfied with that. Girls are seen with neon make-up and clothes. On the bright side, you will never get lost in a crowd.

Fads may come and will soon go, and will hopefully take some of the tie-dye neon fringe with them.
